Description
The LM Bateman Sheep System E suits farms that want a permanent or semi-permanent handling area with built-in drafting, clear work lanes for dosing and inspection, and a curved forcing pen that keeps animals moving steadily. If you’ve outgrown ad-hoc hurdles or lose time re-penning after the race, this layout removes those bottlenecks in one go.
Galvanised rails and gates rinse quickly with a hose or pressure washer. Smooth surfaces shed dirt, and the compact footprint means you can disinfect the race and pens between batches without losing a morning to cleaning. Routine checks on bolts and latches keep the system tight and quiet, preserving calm flow.
Size/Capacity
- Overall length: 13,067 mm
- Overall width: 6,730 mm
- Sheep capacity: approximately 120 head (holding and processing, not a transport rating)
With the overall length at 13,067 mm and overall width at 6,730 mm – this gives the system a compact footprint that fits most yard bays or sits neatly along a building wall. Working capacity is around 120 sheep for holding and processing (this is not a transport rating), which provides a comfortable buffer for typical batch tasks such as drenching, vaccinating, and condition scoring. The 500 mm race width strikes the right balance for mixed-age groups, and the 1,000 mm personnel races give handlers ample room to operate quickly and safely.
Half-circle forcing pen with two access gates
This semi-circular, sheeted forcing pen guides sheep into a natural curve before they meet the race, so they hesitate less than they would at a sharp corner. Two separate access gates make it easy to bring groups in from different directions and step in or out safely without breaking flow. The result is less pushing, smoother entry, and a quicker, calmer start to every job.
500 mm wide race with guillotine gate at entrance and shedding gate at exit
The main race balances throughput with control at a true 500 mm width. A vertical-lift guillotine gate at the entrance is fast to operate from the side and needs no swing clearance, which is ideal in tight yards and keeps hands out of the flight zone. At the exit, a shedding gate diverts animals left or right as you work, letting you sort on the first pass rather than re-penning later. You can meter the line for dosing or tagging, then split fat from lean, ewes from lambs, or drafts for market in one continuous flow.
Two 1000 mm wide drenching/personnel races
Twin walk-along lanes sit alongside the working areas, each a full metre wide. The extra space gives handlers safe reach to the race without blocking movement and provides a clear retreat if an animal surges. You can carry kit comfortably, move at flock speed, and work at a natural arm’s-length height, which reduces fatigue and keeps dosing and vaccination consistent across the batch.
Railed sliding hurdles in drafting pens
The drafting pens use sliding, railed hurdles that run in guides, so you can open, close, or resize a pen with one smooth motion. This lets you fine-tune pen volume to the group in front of you, control pressure at gates, and change direction without rebuilding the layout. Sorting often becomes a one-person task, with positive control maintained throughout and fewer noisy panel changes to unsettle the flock.
Opposite hand available on request
The entire system can be supplied as a mirror image to suit left- or right-hand flow. That means you can match gradients, gateways, and your natural working pattern without forcing awkward turns for sheep or handler crossovers. A mirrored layout delivers the same proven movement with safer, cleaner lines through your yard.
Larger collecting pens and two drafting pens
Compared with simpler setups, this configuration adds capacity before the race and gives you two genuine drafting pens afterwards. Bigger collecting space reduces reloads, while dual drafting pens let you split groups immediately, no backtracking or shuffling animals between pens. Continuous flow is easier to maintain: one person can keep the race fed while another completes treatments or checks, lowering time per head and reducing waiting.
